You Cannot Grasp The River

When we think of a Worldview, we often ascribe it to cultures unfamiliar to us. However, in reality we all have our distinctive Worldview. It is what makes you, you. Your beliefs, values, perceptions of people, places, and events are molded by your personal Worldview. Your Worldview is your template, whether consciously or subconsciously held. It guides your emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.

Authors are also guided by their Worldview and often inject their characters with their own personal perspectives, either fully or partially. Some of the characters reflect a contrary Worldview that is held by the author to promote a diverse perception and enrich the storyline. Well-written novels have character depth enhanced through the infusion of a Worldview painted by the author. That is what brings the characters to life and gives them a realistic presence. Frequently, a transitioning Worldview is the theme of the work.

Just as the oceans are inhabited by diverse creatures interacting with their environment in diverse ways, so too is the global sea of humanity interacting with their environment in diverse ways. The difference is that our Creator made us in His own image capable of logic, emotions, memory, and creativity; all wrapped up in a spiritual entity. Those characteristics individualize us to embrace our own unique Worldview. We filter our perceptions through the grid of our personal belief system and the finished product inculcates our values and beliefs to guide us. A Christian missionary understands this concept well. They are drawn to others who have different cultural backgrounds and perspectives because the missionary has an innate desire to serve the Lord. This obedience is framed by a Christlike love and a recognition of the necessity to understand each individual’s Worldview in order to share the Gospel. For me, and I know for many others, the search for comprehending other’s Worldview, is interesting, necessary, and endorsed by our Lord.
